School Traditions

Through shared rituals, seasonal celebrations, and annual milestones, the students, families, faculty, and alumni connect to each other and to the values that define our school. Below you’ll find some of the cherished traditions that shape life at VBS Day School and help our children grow into confident learners, compassionate friends, and committed Jewish leaders.

School Year Themes

Each school year, our faculty introduce a theme that guides and inspires our community for the year. Every student in the school is invited to design a poster that represents the year's theme. These posters decorate our school and synagogue sukkah. At the end of the Sukkot holiday, the posters are entered into a contest and the winners are featured inside and on the covers of our school's yearbook!
Kindergarten Buddies

As soon as children begin Kindergarten in the Day School, they are welcomed with a sixth grade buddy. The buddy relationship blossoms throughout the year as students join together on academic projects, reading books, celebrating holidays and creating special experiences. A highlight of the program is when our Kindergarteners grow up and are 6th graders themselves- that's when our graduates (now seniors in high school!) return to stand on the bimah with their buddies during graduation.
Game Under the Lights

Athletics are a core component of the culture here at VBS Day School, with more than 90% of students participating in team sports each year. The best game of the year happens each November when our 6th graders get to play flag football at night under the lights. All students participate, even if flag football is not their usual sport, and compete for the Flying Kippah trophy. The entire community is invited, and it's a great night for our alumni who return to cheer on their former kindergarten buddies! Go Lions!
Generations Day

Generations Day is a beloved tradition that welcomes grandparents and special guests to our campus for a morning of learning, connection and meaning. Guests have the opportunity to spend time in the classroom with their special student and are then treated to a musical performance showcasing our students' knowledge and love of Israel. Each year's show invites our guests to experience Israel through a different cultural lens and features performances from every grade level.

Bubby's- our on-campus coffee cart provides a place where our students can always spend time with their grandparents and beloved family members!
